Desperation
What do you do when you know someone is desperate for help, but the help you want -- and can -- give is not the help they want?
He wants money again, the brother I am so fond of vilifying here. The one with the serious problem. I'd like to help him with that problem, and not the financial one. Well, actually, I would like the problem, which should not be my problem, to just go away, but I don't really see that happening.
So what to do, what to do?
If I don't help (financially), what happens to him? Can I live with that? Can the family live with that?
When you know someone is drowning, are you obligated to help? And if you're not, how do you get the screams out of your head?

wow, sounds like an extremely hard situation. hope it works out. it's hard to tell someone what they should do in a personal familial context like this. no one really knows what is right for you. no?
You're right; it is one of those situations where it's impossible to give advice. But I really, really appreciate the support:)
