Perspective

A couple weeks ago when I was certain we hadn't even made the top ten of the contest (see multiple previous posts I'm too lazy to link to), I had a moment of clarity at, of all places, the Ramada Inn in Watertown, NY.

I was plying my trade in the world's oldest profession, something the Ramada's known for ---
Ha! Got your attention.

No, I was in my nightgown and robe in search of ice at midnight, but all the ice machines were broken, a fact pointed out to me by a very nice, polite young man. He too was looking for ice, and he suggested we go down to the lounge together to get it. Along the way, we got to talking and I found out he was a military man from PA, on his way to Iraq on Monday morning.

As you may or may not have guessed, I'm not exactly a huge fan of this immoral, senseless war, or of the corrupt administration behind it. And he seemed like a bright young man, so as delicately as I could, I asked him what he'd been thinking when he signed up. It was complicated, he answered, and then he was quiet for a moment or two. "I wish I'd gone to college first, though," he added.

I wish he had too.

Wherever you are, the nice guy who looked maybe all of twelve in a Ramada Inn in Watertown on an August Friday night, may God (or whoever else is in charge of this stuff) bless you and keep you.

It's all about the choices we make, isn't it?
