The Long Black Veil

Set in 1963, The Long Black Veil is a coming of age story between a drifter and a girl wrapped around the love story of a black man and a married white woman. Jamie Delacroix has spent a decade running from commitment until Jane Novotny worms her way into his life. Calvin Lewis and Eve Novotny have been friends since childhood but only recently admitted their passion for one another. When Jamie discovers their affair, he starts a chain reaction that risks Jane’s family—and Calvin’s life.

What A Long Strange Trip It's Been

Well, to quote Sondheim's Into the Woods once more (as I have done so endlessly this weekend) :

And you think of all of the things you'd seen.
And you wish that you could live in-between.
And you're back again, only different than before.
After the sky.

Not to mention:

And I know things now, many valuable things,
That I hadn't known before.
Do not put your faith in a cape and a hood.
They will not protect you the way that they should.
And take extra care with strangers, even flowers have their dangers,
And though scary is exciting,
Nice is different than good.
..
...Isn't it nice to know a lot?
And a little bit... not.
New Orleans still stands. People are returning home. And it will be a long uphill battle for normalcy, but at least they're trying.
It's a start.
