Sleep Wars
I can't remember who said it, and I'm too lazy to go look, but there's this quote that says essentially that a gulf exists between people who can sleep and people who can't. Needless to say, I'm one of those who can't, and those who've tried to share a bed with me might atest. Not only do I (as Kramer would say) 'got the jimmy legs', I got a jimmy mind.
Take last night. I get into bed around 11:40, read for an hour (The Amber Spyglass, Phillip Pullman, very compelling) and then, thinking I've hit the sweet spot of pre-sleep, I turn out the light and... nothing. And everything. It's like it all waits to come crowding in just when I know I've got to shut down. How'm I gonna pay for... What'll happen if... Why doesn't she just... And so on and so on. I talk to my brain, I tell it to shut up --
"You should -- "
"Shut up, brain."
"But you could probably find a cure for cancer if --
"I said, shut up brain!"
But my brain never listens.
Maybe I need a jimi thing. :)
