Break Out

Lately I have a tremendous urge to liquidate my assets (which wouldn't take all that long, actually), buy some seriously good fake ID (before we end up with National ID cards to complicate the matter) and a laptop, dye my hair some color it's never been (which leaves me with only a couple of choices)and just light out for the territories.

Maybe it's an American thing -- see the USA in your Chevrolet and all that. I'm not sure my wanderlust is that simple, though. A few years ago, I bought this really interesting book, How to Disappear Completely and Never Be Found. (Apparently the guys from Radiohead bought the book too...) Anyway, I read some of the book, but not all of it. Not yet. It was just too tempting.

I still have that book, though.

Do you remember your Pippin (or at least that cheesy song you probably sang in choir -- "Corner of the Sky")?

"So, maybe some misty day, you'll
Waken to my find me gone
And far away, you'll
hear me singing to the dawn
And you'll wonder if I'm happy there
A little more than I've been,
And the answer will come back to you
Like laughter on the wind..."

Then again, as Hemingway once said, "You lose it if you talk about it." And since I (we) wrote an entire book that began with the premise of wanting to drive away from the past only to discover that wherever you go, there you are, well...

I'll probably be here in the morning.
